Missing Teeth

Blandy House

About This Condition

Teeth can be missing for a variety of reasons including tooth loss from gum disease, decay, trauma or genetics.

Teeth are designed to work collaboratively so when there is a tooth missing it can impact the way our entire mouth functions depending on the where the gap is situated. Missing teeth can affect the way we speak, eat and cause alignment and gum issues where there is secondary movement of other teeth towards the gap. The shape of your face can also be altered by missing teeth – cheeks can appear to lose volume and the natural position of the jaw can shift. An affected person can often become self-conscious when smiling if the gaps are visible.

Thankfully, there are several treatment options available including:

  • Orthodontic treatment to close the gaps.
  • Dental Implants to replace either a single tooth or multiple teeth.
  • A Dental Bridge – this can be attached to adjacent teeth when one or more teeth are missing from the same area.
  • Removable Partial Dentures – (where implant or bridge treatment is not possible) a discrete denture can be used to replace the missing teeth.
